The slot is the best option for wideouts who are quick, since they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot work. He's a good player for intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers who perform better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great choice for a sleeper this year, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to play on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to excel in short-to-mid routes, given that's exactly what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. He could be an excellent replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it isn't always a true representation of a receiver's skill set as certain receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance leads the league in goals per game (4.8), but is only 6th in slot providers receiving scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets have come from the outside and it is difficult to score a first-down on a wide-open, deep route in that setting.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside and aren't able to do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Additionally it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are also excellent. As a group wide receivers with high slot receiving grades score touchdowns roughly at the same amount as those who play on the edge. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact the slot providers receiver is running a higher number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this list. This is an excellent way to generate matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He's among the top players in the game at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic player who can play contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive line. On the other hand, he's struggled to prevent passes from the outside and has been able to give an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is due to him playing with safety and linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
